Quin Castle, Co. Clare

Originally Thomas De Clare built a stronghold in 1280 after his defeat. It was stormed after much turblance between neighboring lands, and destroyed in 1304. From the ashes was erected the Franciscan Friary. There is much legend surrounding this site regarded De Clare and the Abbey.

One popular story tells of how the Nc Namara chieftain’s son fell in to the River Ryan near the Ruined site of the Castle. He prayed to God that if he spared his sons life he would do a good deed for the church. His son was spared and as a gift to God he built the Abby on the Ruin of Quin Castle.
